FREE ONLINE WEBINAR ARCHAEOLOGY IN SPARTA
The Pallaconian Brotherhood continues their series of lectures commemorating the 2500th Anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae. This lecture presented by Daphne Martin archaeological sites in Sparta and around Lakonia, and also the ongoing work for their integration into daily life, as cultural sites to be visited, to learn from, and to be inspired by, for visitors and locals alike.

VIRTUAL OPEN LECTURE: KEROUAC AND THE GREEK CONNECTION
Greek-born poet, translator and researcher George Mouratidis will host a lecture as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne’s ongoing Greek history and culture seminars. Mr Mouratidis will delve into the novels of Jack Kerouac and how – growing up in the working-class French-Canadian and Greek migrant community of Lowell, Massachusetts – for him served as a key counterpoint to the open road and urban bohemias for which he is most celebrated.

VIRTUAL OPEN LECTURE: ELIA KAZAN AND THE DIASPORIC IDENTITY OF A GREEK AMERICAN FILM MAKER
University of Sydney Professor Vrasidas Karalis will delve into the artistic and intellectual development of Elia Kazan from his early theatrical productions, his films to his final autobiographical books. The lecture will ask the question of how the identity of the ‘outsiders’ adapt and the compromises that they must make in order to be accepted by their adopted countries. Kazan also gave a notorious testimony at the Anti-American Activities Committee and much controversy that followed him throughout his life.

BRIMBANK WRITERS AND READERS FESTIVAL ONLINE
This year Brimbank Council is bringing the festival to you online, over three weekends in September so get ready and book yourself in. Due to COVID-19, the Festival is taking place online with a series of videos featuring six authors in intimate conversation. All conversations were filmed at the Bowery Theatre, videos produced by Cinespace Inc, and will premiere on Brimbank Libraries YouTube Channel. The festival will cover themes such as stories of strength and resilience, memoirs and families & crime.

RE-IMAGINE: WHAT NEXT?
The Australia Council for the Arts invites the community to a series of town hall meetings, to discuss the questions: What do we want the arts and cultural industries to look like in 2030 and how do we get there? A discussion paper has been published by the Council on their website asking communities and artists to take part in future planning.

NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH MONTH LAUNCH
National Mental Health Month is an initiative of the Mental Health Foundation Australia to advocate for and raise awareness of Australian mental health. At this launch, presentations will be made to the winners of the Schools’ Creative Writing Competition and Art Competition 2020. There will also be an opportunity for you to sit in on formal addresses, on the Victorian government’s plans for mental health into the future and the current Royal Commission into mental health.

SINGING WORKSHOP WITH ELSA MOURATIDOU
Greek Fringe is thrilled to host an online singing workshop with renowned vocalist from Greece Elsa Mouratidou. This workshop will be held on zoom and is open to a limited number of participants. Τhe workshop’s theme will be women who break the stereotypes of “proper” mothers, daughters or wives in Greek folk music and no prior knowledge is required to join in.

ONLINE SETTLEMENT SERVICES FOR NEWLY ARRIVED PEOPLE
In an effort to support the newly-arrived immigrants settle and find job opportunities in their new home, Pronia is continuing the project “Settlement Services for Newly-Arrived People” online, with morning and afternoon English language workshops.
