Fiesta Kultura Emerge 2001 Uganda
The Ugandan community of WA presented an afternoon of traditional culture from Uganda. Beginning with a drumming exhibition and fashion parade, youth from the community performed dances from Northern, Central and Eastern Uganda. We were intoxicated by the aromas of authentic Ugandan curries, while wandering through this afternoon of cultural exchange of food, textiles and dance. Sunday 26th August 2001 Uganda Uganda The Ugandan Community of Western Australia treated the large audience who came to KULCHA on Sunday 26th August to an afternoon of singing, dance and traditional cuisine.
The Ugandan Community is one of the smallest African communities in Western Australia and also one of the first to respond to the expressions of interest to participate in the Fiesta Kultura Emerge project 2001. Clearly proud to share there unique culture from the 'pearl of Africa', Ugandan community members brought their friends and family to celebrate and see the cultural traditions of north, east, west and southern Uganda, including a wedding dance.
The audience was a complete mix of people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. The Ugandan Fiesta Kultura like the previous NILE and Ethiopian events proved an incredible forum for people to learn about the small but vibrant cultures within Western Australia. Special thanks to Ugandan Community Co-ordinator Mr Martin Mutenyi and the President of the Ugandan Community of Western Australia, Mr Francis Adupa and Ms Caroline Caddy for organising the dancers and youth performers.
