Gina Williams Quintet (Indigenous)She doesn't sound like Ella or Billie, but you can tell she's listened to them. They more than account for the jazz thrust in the original songs she writes, and her smooth, clear vocals are well suited to the jazz standards she performs. And while she's only considered herself a professional singer for the past 12 months, Gina is fast gaining recognition as a singer/songwriter, giving voice to the Perth duo "Diatonic." In the past 12 months, Gina won the Aboriginal category of the WA Song Contest, was selected to perform at Kulcha for ABC radio as part of the "Music Deli" series. Gina supported Wendy Matthews in January at a free concert on the South Perth Foreshore and she will also share the bill with Joe Camilleri in February. The simplicity of the songs she writes, affectionately known as "snapshots" leave plenty of room way for beautiful vocals and adept accompaniment from her band of "distinguished guests." Joining Gina at the quarry will be Hugh Ryder (keyboards) Steve Ellis (Guitar) Dean Peka (bass) and Gordon Ryder (drums). Hugh Ryder has played piano and guitar for many years. He is currently teaching Music in Bunbury where he has played in various groups majoring in gospel style piano and organ. |
