KULCHA Statement

Re: Amnesty International ARTillery Youth Arts Event
KULCHA, Saturday 14 November 2009

On Saturday 14 November 2009, the Amnesty International ARTillery Youth Arts event was scheduled to take place at KULCHA and include a performance of the play "Seven Jewish Children". The performance of the play was withdrawn by Amnesty International following complaints from the local Jewish community that the play was offensive to them.

KULCHA did not cancel the performance of the play, but encouraged a dialogue between the parties involved, Amnesty International WA and the Jewish Community Council of WA, to find a mutually amicable solution to the situation, which is what eventuated.

The KULCHA Board's position is that the charter of KULCHA is one of inclusivity and reconciliation and that the hosting of the play is not consistent with this charter.
