Spring at KULCHAWelcome to the Spring Season at KULCHA that features an amazing array of inspiring artistic diversity and quality performances over the coming two month program. As part of the new season format, we are delighted to invite ethnomusicologist David Walker to curate a series of special shows for the KULCHA concert venue. David is the former President of the Australian Institute of Eastern Music and Artistic Director of the Asian Music and Dance Festival at the Sydney Opera House. His work has contributed in bringing young artists such as Joseph Tawadros and Bobby Singh to national attention. David is a current member of KULCHA's Programming Subcommittee and is deeply interested in developing local talent in the wide and diverse field of arts from all places of the world. For the Spring Season, David has coordinated some very exciting performances based on the theme of Eastern Rhythms.

James Tawadros makes a tambourine sound like a full drum kit and this concert presents the Middle Eastern rhythms of his req' with one of Perth's leading jazz drummers. Local meets global in the most brilliant of ways.

Friday 23 September 6.30pmHHH - South Fremantle Senior High SchoolHHH is a learning program which places artists-in-residence in the classroom with students to investigate themes of identity and cultural diversity through the contemporary medium of hip hop. The South Fremantle Senior High School concert features original work produced by the young hip hop creators, with guest MCs Daz Reutens, Bryte MC, Matt Hykus, Tommy Truong and Meng Jones and musicians Freddy Poncin and Djibril Diagne, hosted by SFSHS music teacher, Craig Wallace-Gibb.

Saturday 24 September 8pmFRED SMITH (ACT)Dust of Uruzgan CD LaunchAcclaimed Australian songwriter Fred Smith recently returned from 18 months working as tribal and political advisor alongside Australian Forces in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. While in Afghanistan, he wrote a collection of songs from his experiences and recorded the album Dust of Uruzgan. Fred Smith will be once again be taking the KULCHA stage accompanied by the esteemed teaming of Liz Frencham (double bass), Reuben Kooperman (drums) and the Spooky Men Of The West (their tonsils) to launch his highly acclaimed new album, accompanied by projections of a stunning set of photographic images from Afghanistan. Sunday 25 September 2pm MatineePERTH SCOTTISH FIDDLERS WITH ROB ZIELINSKIFiddler's DreamThe Perth Scottish Fiddlers is a group of musicians who come together to play the rich and extensive violin and dance repertoire of Scotland, from beautiful airs and elegant strathspeys to fast and furious reels and jigs. Directed by Margaret Schlink, this event features soloist, Rob Zielinski, who spent 14 years in Ireland and Scotland immersing himself in the form. He taught at the Galway School of Traditional Irish Music and in 2000 won Ireland's Michael Coleman Traditional Fiddler of the Year award. Robert has toured in the US and in Europe and is now dedicating himself to the passing on of the tradition in Australia.

Residual sees the pair develop unique approaches to combining Vietnamese and Western music elements in a ontemporary setting, employing innovative extended techniques applied to traditional Vietnamese instruments and trumpet along with spontaneous electro-acoustic composition.

Saturday 8 October 8pmMASONIKThe Invocation Frame - WA premiereKULCHA invites you to a very special live audiovisual performance of The Invocation Frame by Masonik. The Invocation Frame is a complex narrative made for the ABC and ABC Pool initiative The 30 Days of Creativity, and was recently showcased at Melbourne's Federation Square. The live improvisations in this multi-musician project draw from a huge variety of sources including spoken word, world music and film. Their musical references range from Arabic, Jewish, Greek, Indian and Pakistani, fused with jazz, blues and dub to create lush soundscapes in alternate spaces. Friday 14 October 8pmKRZYSZTOF PIOTROWICZRussian Guitar CD LaunchKrzysztof Piotrowicz is Australia's pioneer performer of the traditional Russian guitar repertoire - music including Russian Romances and Russian-Romani (Gypsy) songs and dances, performed on both classical guitar and on the native Russian 7 string guitar. With this special KULCHA performance, he will launch his debut solo CD, Russian Guitar: Volume 1, which is the first of its kind recorded in Australia and one of the first in the world outside of Russia. Krzysztof also plays the native Russian balalaika folk instrument and will perform solos on the night from his new recording as well as Russian gypsy duets with Mardae Selepak.
