SAMITH PICH - THE MANGO TREE VISUAL ARTS OPENING

Love, sun and mangoes weave their magic in an exhibition of new works by emerging Australian/Khmer Artist Samith Pich. Inspired by the Angus & Julia Stone Song I Wish I had a Mango Tree, Samith continues his exploration into innate human desires for connection and, in particular, the shared search for love. Painting in an emotively colourful, bold and figurative style Samith invites viewers to come and share their experiences of love and summer amongst the vibrant leaves of The Mango Tree. FREE EVENT

KWACHALA -

KWACHALA Kwachala return to KULCHA in 2010 with their infectious African reggae rhythms. Kwachala means 'happy hour' and the group invites you to join them for a non-stop night of dancing, reggae and African beats. Using conscious roots and fire driven rhythms, dance floors are set ablaze at every show. Don't miss this night of 'raggazinha' - reggae, rhythm and dance.

ARTHUR GRACIAS - INDO-JAZZ

ARTHUR GRACIAS Arthur Gracias is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, keyboardist, composer and pioneer of Indo-Jazz. He returns to KULCHA in 2010 with a show that is sure to mesmerise you with its spicy melting pot of Indian ragas, rhythms and contemporary jazz harmonies. Arthur will perform new works as well as tracks from his previously released CD's.

SHOFAR Blending traditional folk music with a new-skool bent, Shofar are a klezmer band with a difference. FREMANTLE CARNIVALE COSTUME BALL Carnevale is a vibrant annual festival of transgression held in many parts of Europe and Latin America and this year it arrives in Fremantle. Meet at the Italian Club at 6.30pm, and in in the costumed Caracole through the streets of Fremantle to KULCHA, then climb the stairs for a night of revelry with the Carnevale Masked Costume Ball. Hosted by intriguing MC Bruno Michel, the entertainment includes hilarious traditional Italian troupe Commedia Academy, Freo's dynamic WASAMBA and a kaleidoscope of talents in the Carnevale Community Cabaret. Start preparing your costume now for an extraordinary night of Fremantle celebrations!

In the Carnevale tradition of 'farewell to the flesh', there will be food available to purchase at the Fremantle Carnevale Costume Ball including a marinated meat pack and a vegetarian option. These can be purchased from the KULCHA Bar and will be cooked for you on the bbq balcony by the staff from Refresh catering and served with bread.

DARAMAD QUARTET -

DARAMAD QUARTET In the Persian classical tradition, daramad refers to the process of beginning or emerging out of something. Daramad Quartet has emerged out of KULCHA's Freeform improvisation evenings, bringing together musicians of different cultural and musical backgrounds. The group explores the confluence between music of the Middle East and improvised jazz and features Iranian saz and guitar maestro, Reza Mirzaei, oud and eastern percussion specialist, Michael Zolker, double bassist, Phil Waldron and multi-reedman, Mark Cain.

PETE CLARK Sat 20 February 2pm
PETE CLARK

Pete Clark is a fiddle tutor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. Pete directs the Niel Gow Festival held in March every year in Dunkeld and Birnam. He toured Japan with the Edinburgh branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, and has played for classes at their annual summer school.

SEAMIE O'DOWD supported by CRAIG SINCLAIR
Seamie O'Dowd (Ireland) has toured with Irish band Dervish and collaborated with renowned musicians including Mairtin O'Connor and Tommy Emmanuel. He picked up the fiddle at age eight and by eighteen was a multi-instrumentalist, having also mastered the guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, banjo, and bodhran. Join Seamie and Australian singer songwriter Aminah Hughes on a journey of ethereal Irish, soothing folk and rockin' blues. Supported by Albany blues singer/songwriter Craig Sinclair.

Prepare yourself for a memorable evening with two of Perth's finest purveyors of reggae. Mellifluous have steadily gained a reputation as one of WA's must-see acts. Originally from New Zealand, the boys have settled in the South West and, with support slots for Bonjah, Tzu and Banawurun under their belts, they've proven they have some serious reggae chops. Meanwhile, DJ Azwon will be setting the KULCHA balcony on fya with some smooth cuts of roots reggae.

PERTH URBAN GYPSIES Roll up for a night of guitar mastery as Alex Borthwick and Glenn Rogers present their fiery blend of Latin and Spanish rhythms mixed with jazz harmonies. The Perth Urban Gypsies repertoire includes the music of Chick Corea and John Mclaughlin as well as original compositions. Using acoustic guitar and delay effects, the gypsies deliver a stunning ambient sonority. Don't miss Glenn's debut performance on his 27-string scalloped fretboard guitar.

FREMANTLE GLOBAL ARKESTRA Fremantle Global Arkestra's music transcends earthbound limitations by riding the flights of imagination. This February they present Tibet Suite and other original compositions at KULCHA. The three movement suite will journey through a maze of instruments including saranghi, bass clarinet and oud. Pulsing guitar and keyboards add to the effect while bass flute, saxophone and trumpets sound the alarm. Expect the unexpected on this night of improvisation and imagination.
