I LOVE PHO - CURATED BY CUONG PHU LE
Exhibition Launch
Saturday 10 - Saturday 24 May Breadbox Gallery, 233 James Street, Northbridge
Why is it we always remember the smell, taste and the experience of our favourite foods?
Perhaps it is because food is intrinsically linked to expression, defining different cultural heritages, adopting, changing and mirroring the transitions of society.
This is exceptionally true of Phở, the Vietnamese beef noodle soup, where history, culture and happiness are all mixed together in a clear broth.
This touring exhibition uses Phở as a metaphor to interpret and reveal a Viêt Nam whose people and history are as varied and complex as the preparation and cooking of a bowl of Phở itself.
I Love Phở combines the work of eight artists, a catalogue including essays and poems written by well-known writers, live performances, artists' talks and Phở cooking demonstrations.
Perth-based artists Khoat Van Nguyen and Tommy Truong and cooking instructor, Nguyet-Anh Truong will add local ingredients to this touring exhibition.
'Viet Nam in a bowl, heaven in a spoon, culture in a sip.'
Peta Mathias
A Kultour event and Casula Powerhouse project supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, the City of Perth and the Office of Multicultural Interests.
Curated by Cuong Phu Le.

TOTALLY GOURDGEOUS -
Totally Gourdgeous is a bizarre group that plays handmade gourd instruments - yes, constructed from hollowed and dried pumpkin shells!
The band includes Penelope Swales on gourd-guitar, Carl Pannuzzo on gourd-percussion, Mal Webb on gourd-bass and Andrew Clermont on gourd-fiddle and gourd-mandolin.
Oh, and they all sing (in a gourdy manner, of course). Imagine Joni Mitchell and James Brown getting down in Bob Marley's pumpkin patch and you're close to their playful songs of love, fellowship and environmental sanity.
