PROGRAM

Vicky Ramakrishnan TAAL CHAKRA
(Vicky Ramakrishnan, tabla; Joshua Hogan, percussion; Steve Richter, percussion)

Taal Chakra is the convergence of three percussionists from distinct backgrounds with a common goal: the exploration of rhythm and the drum. The group fuses musical aspects from the Northern Indian Tabla drumming tradition with a range of drums and percussion instruments from around the globe and a hint of electronics.
The result is a fiery and delicious blend of rhythms and textures. The group brings together Vicky Ramakrishnan and Josh Hogan from Mukti with Steven Richter of Mr Sister and Sabroson fame.

SCOPE
(Paul Tanner, mallets; Freddy Poncin, congas; Daniel Susnjar, drum kit; Matthew Styles, saxophones/flute; Matt Willis, bass; Konrad Paszkudzki, piano)

Scope is a jazz fusion group that features three outstanding percussionists from very different traditions:
    Drums
  • Freddy Poncin is a master conga and djembe player from the Netherlands who has delighted Perth audiences and enthused percussionists with his dynamic and world-class hand drumming skills;
  • Daniel Susnjar is one of Perth's finest and busiest drummers, having performed worldwide with international greats such as Hossam Ramzy, James Morrison and Don Burrows;
  • Paul Tanner is a virtuoso percussion soloist who plays in a wide variety of classical, jazz and world music groups in Perth and regularly tours the UK with his guitar/percussion duo, OgdenTanner.
Joining the three percussionists are Matthew Styles, Matt Willis and Konrad Paszkudzki. Together they will transport you from the rock/Indian/jazz influences of Tanner's Adios, to the pensive and Spanish flavours of Chick Corea and infectious Cuban percussive rhythms.

SPRING PERCUSSION
(Robyn Sarti, Paul Tanner, with Joshua Hogan and Daniel Susnjar)

Paul Tanner and Robyn Sarti are two of Perth's busiest classical percussionists, performing regularly with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and teaching at the University of WA and the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Japanese Drumming Their ensemble's virtuosity is featured regularly on ABC FM and in festivals and recitals around the country.

Tonight they will play a Japanese-influenced duet by Kerryn Joyce (from the Brisbane-based duo, Karak Percussion), a Tango from the great Argentinian bandoneon player, Astor Piazzolla; some 70s experimental rock from legendary UK group, King Crimson (featuring Danny Susnjar on drum kit and Josh Hogan on bass marimba); a meditative vibraphone solo by Mark Glentworth; and Spring with Akwaaba, Djenne.

AKWAABA
African drumming and dancing, led by Paul Osei Kofi

Paul Osei Kofi Akwaaba, meaning "welcome" in the Ashanti language from Ghana, West Africa, is a group of dynamic musicians dedicated to promoting peace and unity within the West Australian community through traditional African drumming and dancing. The group is led by master drummer and drumming facilitator Paul Osei Kofi.

For countless generations, drumming has been used to convey messages of welcome, farewell, gratitude and remembrance. The sound of the djembe drum carries powerful symbols of celebration and energy. For the past seven years, Akwaaba has brought the traditional rhythms of West Africa alive to audiences at a variety of locations around Perth. They also conduct workshops and specialise in private and corporate events.

Akwaaba will be joined by percussionists from Taal Chakra, Spring Percussion and Scope to perform Final Jam.
