    FACES OF SUDAN - Joanna Zaliki Knowles

    Cairo-born Joanna Zaliki Knowles grew up in countries as diverse as Vietnam, Guatemala and South Africa, and since 2005 has lived and worked in various regions of Sudan.

    She is fascinated by the people, landscape and history of this vast country and hopes to share some aspects of everyday life in Sudan. Joanna believes the most intriguing feature of this nation is its enormous diversity.

    Faces of Sudan presents an insight into the vast range of Sudanese ethnic groups, languages and cultures, as well as the contrasting and breathtaking landscapes.

    MUKTI - Virtuosic Fusion

    Immerse yourself in Mukti's delicious virtuosic fusion. Fresh from performances at the Woodford Folk Festival, the band returns to KULCHA with innovative sounds and new tunes.

    Be inspired by a combination of Indian rhythms, jazz-infused chords and Spanish flair with a classical lilt from renowned local musicians Glenn Rogers, Josh Hogan, Mel Robinson and Vick Ramakrishnan.

    Sometimes meditative and reflective, sometimes passionate and full of fire, Mukti's music is generously laced with spicy rhythms.

    FUNKALLEROS - Urban Latino

    Embracing the diverse multitude of musical cultures of Latin America, Funkalleros party the night away with a tasty recipe of Mestizo rock and roots sprinkled with Cumbia-reggae, a funky horn section and some crazy guitar antics.

    A finalist in 2007's WAM Song of the Year competition for their original composition 'Upside Down', Funkalleros are the roots and high power grooves of urban Latino America in Australia - expect the unexpected.

    Following a KULCHA artist mentorship program, Peruvian musician Eduardo Cossio teams with multi-instrumentalists Mark Cain and Merle Fishwick.

    Drawing from classical, jazz and different folk traditions, Trio Taranta create a refreshingly diverse set consisting of instrumental pieces and songs in both English and Spanish.

    Be amazed by their versatility, broad stylistic range and inventive wealth of melodies. Join the trio on a fascinating musical journey combining wind, string and percussion instruments from around the world.

    TIBETAN BUDDHIST MONKS CHANTING - PERFORMANCE

    Experience an uplifting evening of traditional Tibetan chanting at KULCHA.

    This unique cultural event will feature Tibetan Buddhist monks from India in a presentation of their internationally renowned traditional deep harmonic chanting. Featuring overtone chanting blending three octaves simultaneously, be treated to an evening of ancient ritual music punctuated by Tibetan long horns, cymbals, trumpets, drums and unique chord chants.

    TIBETAN BUDDHIST MONKS CHANTING - WORKSHOP

    Attend a unique chanting workshop with Tibetan Buddhist monks visiting Perth from India.

    Learn the processes of chanting in this one-off workshop conducted by four Tibetan Buddhist ritual arts masters, who will instruct you in the ancient traditions, complexities and disciplines of performing this world famous deep harmonic chanting.

    Hear about some of the history of the chanting, how and why it began and the importance of the chanting within Tibetan spiritual life.

    RUSSIAN COMMUNITY EVENT - Russian Popular Folk

    A night of Russian culture awaits you at KULCHA with a special performance by Rusichi, WA's only Russian folk act.

    They present a night of traditional and contemporary folk song and dance based on Russia's more popular folk songs, Katusha and Kalinka.

    Enjoy this traditional display of Russian culture as Rusichi performs folk festival favourites in traditional costume.
