    Following the success of an Aria Jazz top ten album and a recent tour of Japan and the US renowned a capella vocal ensemble The Idea of North visit Perth on their 2004 National tour, celebrating their new CD 'Evidence'. Regarded by James Morrison as the "the best contemporary a cappella group in the country", the group features a mix of jazz, soul, gospel and original music.

    The Last Five Coins play traditional dance music and songs from the villages and cafes of Europe, from Brittany to Istanbul, from the Mediterranean to the Baltic. The music features more than a dozen instruments including hurdy-gurdy, accordion, flute and mandocello, joined by the soaring soprano voice of Laura Bernay and dancer Ivanna Mayorenko.     Business skills are becoming crucial for performing artists with an increasing focus within the industry on legal rights and responsibilities of artists and community performers. In today’s performing arts environment business skills are equally as important as creativity and artistic vision.

    Material covered will include

    • Key cases in contract law
    • Risk Management – Overview
    • Insurance Principles – Overview

    These seminars are suitable for all performing artists, however artists intending on working with KULCHA over the 2004/05 financial year are especially highly recommended to attend these seminars.

    KULCHA is hosting two seminars focusing on basic business skills for artists covering areas such as contracts, insurance and finances. These seminars are FREE and are vital to any performers thinking of forming a group, or currently wanting to expand their skills and knowledge of these sometimes unfamiliar areas.

    These seminars will be conducted by Chris Chalon, Lecturer, Arts Management, WA Academy of Performing Arts.

    Biography – Christopher Chalon
    Christopher possesses a wealth of experience in both the corporate world and the arts world. A former Customer Service Manager and Officer in Charge of Training and Development within Telstra’s Commercial Division, he left that organisation to complete a degree in Arts Management at the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management at Curtin University. He then worked as a Senior Consultant in Quality Management at one of Perth’s largest TAFE Colleges. In the Arts, Christopher has performed administrative stints at the Perth Theatre Trust, His Majesty’s Theatre and The West Australian Opera, and is a former member of the Board of Management for the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra. As a guitarist/vocalist, he has worked in several bands around Perth’s contemporary music scene for over 20 years. He is now a fulltime lecturer in Arts Management at WAAPA and is studying toward his PhD.

    Hindustani & Afghani sitar sounds
    Khalil Gudaz is one of the most exciting Sitarists to come out of Afghanistan and India in recent times and has created a unique style of Sitar melody. His sitar playing has being "compared to a cool, smooth, gentle, fascinating breeze" and blends the character of the great North Indian Raag traditions with his Afghani heritage. Gudaz is accompanied by Yama Sarshar on tabla and a tanpoora player.
